memorial weekend

Mike and I planned a little trip just the two of us for memorial weekend so last weekend we headed to Washington D.C.  Mike had never been, we got a great deal on flights and hotels, and it was a GREAT city to be in for Memorial Day!
The first day it was rainy and cold but from Friday on, it was perfect.  We walked more in those 5 days then I have in LONG time and we slept like rocks every night!  We had so much fun together, we haven't been around each other for that long by ourselves, probably since we've had Drew, and it was awesome.  It was funny though, how often we both would say, "Drew would love that!" or "it would be so fun if the kids were here!"  But ultimately, I'm glad they were having fun with my parents and their cousins...we need that time together!

Mike was so excited about the Museum of Natural History...he really enjoyed it but was a little annoyed by some of the political undertones in descriptions or general info...gotta love him!  For some reason this rock made him think of Joe Dirt?

I loved the quotes everywhere.  We saw the original Star Spangled Banner that inspired Francis Scott Key.  It was so worn and thin and it was HUGE!  I love that so many of our nations treasured historical items are preserved for us to see.  It was a spiritual experience to see.

We got the hang of the metro!  I kinda wish we had these around here!

 gorgeous weather!
 We couldn't resist this one...
The Holocaust Museum was sobering and amazing all at once.
We took an Uber taxi to the Washington D.C. Temple.  It is huge and beautiful and if it was green it would look like Oz...yes?!
 Another beautiful day...

National pride and patriotism around every corner of this city.  Truly awesome!
I was pretty disappointed that the U.S. Capitol was under renovation.  They are bird-proofing it with panels that will have slight electrical charges so that they fly away and don't roost on the top.  Pretty interesting.  Our tour guide was hysterical and it was a neat tour but the ceiling of the rotunda was partially covered so Mike didn't get to see the beautiful, original painting, which made me sad because its breath-taking.

We met up with some friend of ours, Norman and Stacy, who we had not seen in 7 years!  They were in our ward when we were just married, then moved to Australia for a few years because she is a genius and was going to grad school ;) but now they live in Richmond.  We had such a great time catching up, we were so sad to leave them.  We actually stayed out really late that night so we could get as much time with them as possible.  Friends like that are hard to find...where you pick up right where you left off and feel 21 again!

While we were with them, we rode to the Iwo Jima memorial which is so neat all lit up at night.  Then we went to the Cheesecake Factory at like 11:00 pm for cheesecake...this is my ALL TIME FAVORITE...tuxedo brownie with mascarpone cheese...LOVE.
For memorial day we went to Arlington Cemetery...it was a beautiful day and an awesome place to be on a day like that.  We heard President Obama speak along with the Secretary of Defense and a few others.  We saw the Change of the Guard.  In his speech, Ashton Carter talked about remembering those who have given their lives for our country, not only on Memorial day but when we hear the pledge of allegiance, see the American flag flying in front of a school or at a mall, when we see men and women in uniform, when we thank God for our freedom, that we remember those men and women who fought to the end for what we have.  It really resonated with me and I am so grateful I was there to hear those words and share that experience.  How blessed we are to be given so much and how thankful we should be to those brave souls.

 Such a great day!
I LOVED most walking the streets with this guy.  We saw some cool things and met some neat people, ate pretty great food and had a lot of fun!  It was a grand time!
