We were in Dallas (more on that coming later) for the weekend and didn't get home until late Sunday night but you better believe I was up in the attic the next morning getting those decorations down! I had this grand vision of us decorating our tree for Family Home Evening Monday night, with pandora playing Christmas music in the background and the kids having a blast. It was more like Mike and I fluffing the branches and putting the lights on, getting frustrated with each other in the process, until 8:00 pm with 2 kids who wanted to play DS and watch TV instead! One strand of lights was totally out and the extra ones I bought that morning had white wiring instead of green like the rest so the tree got finished yesterday, by me, while the big kids were at school and Jillian took a nap. But...its done and I love it and the kids did put on a few of the non-breakable ornaments I had set aside for them once I was done.
Every year growing up, my parents would take us to pick out one new ornament for our tree and it was kind of a tradition that I got an angel, Billy got a bear, and Sean got a train each time. Ultimately my mom would let us pick what we wanted and as we got older sometimes we would choose something else (like one year Sean got the Starship Enterprise from Hallmark that actually connected to the Christmas lights on the tree and lit up and made the swooshing sound like on Star Trek...it was cool!) but most of the time, I always chose an angel. She gave them all to me once Mike and I got married and so I have them on our tree, along with many others we've collected over the last 8 years. I'm so thankful she started that tradition! The angel in the picture above is one of the first ornaments I remember of my childhood and I just love her!
This is the picture I sent to Mike once it was all done ;) sometimes we flirt!
On Tuesday morning, our Elf on the Shelf, Buddy, showed up from the North Pole, just like last year, with a cute little breakfast for us!
Drew sure did ask a lot of specific questions about him this year which has made me question whether or not to keep up this tradition but that is another post for another day. The kids loved it, especially the white powdered donuts. Before you start thinking that our elf is super creative, just know, he has only moved once since that morning...ha!
And, if that isn't enough Christmas prep for the first 4 days of December, I also got crafty this week...
The majority of my Christmas shopping and mailing is done, the crawfish ornaments are mostly for family members we typically don't buy for but wanted to get a little something for, the pinecones were from my friend's yard that I felt like making into ornaments to fill the tree out a little more, and the nativity is a copy-cat of one Mike's aunt made for me that I intended to bring for our Relief Society gift exchange tonight (make it, bake it, sew it, grow it) that I can no longer attend because Jillian has a respiratory infection! I had fun making all of them though and can definitely provide instructions if anyone requests it! I love Christmas, especially with kiddos and I think it will be a fun few weeks to come!
