The other night he wanted to watch The Grinch. We have both versions, the cartoon and the movie with Jim Carrey so he said, "I don't want the other one, just the one where he is furry. I mean, you know, the one where they are real, not the one that's flat"!
Today he got in the car after school and was telling me that he was playing with some friends on the playground. He mentioned playing with Ryan (a girl Ryan) and said, "Ryan is my favorite one, I like how the way she looks". So I asked if he thought she was pretty and he said yes and so I was explaining to him that when he thinks nice things like that about people he can tell them and it is called a compliment. He said "or I can just say I love you"! I really hope he's not telling girls he loves them yet! So I asked him if he thought I was pretty, just to see what he'd say, and this is how it went...
Drew "well, not really right now"
Me "not right now? why not?"
Drew "because, well, those sunglasses make you full"
Me "ok so if I didn't have my sunglasses on, I'd look pretty?"
Drew "yeah"
Me "do you like my hair better when it is curly like this or straight?"
Drew "um when it is in a ponytail"
Me "do you like Ryan's hair because she usually has it in a ponytail?" (he mentions liking long hair often)
Drew "yeah"
Me" so do you think she is pretty just because of her hair?"
Drew "no, I think all of her is pretty"
Me "do you like my hair better when it is curly like this or straight?"
Drew "um when it is in a ponytail"
Me "do you like Ryan's hair because she usually has it in a ponytail?" (he mentions liking long hair often)
Drew "yeah"
Me" so do you think she is pretty just because of her hair?"
Drew "no, I think all of her is pretty"
Me "when do you think I look the prettiest?"
Drew "when you are at home snuggling me" (heart melt!)
Me "really?! when I'm in my jammies, snuggling you?"
Drew "not in your jammies, when you are in dresses"
Me "on Sundays then? When I wear dresses to church?"
Drew "no, when you wear dresses and snuggle me"
It seriously took all I had to keep a straight face...it was so funny!
Then we talked more about giving people compliments when we think about something good about them. I told him it would probably make her feel happy if he told her she was pretty and then we talked about other positive things about people, as not to focus on physical appearances. Yesterday he saw Susanna's turtle that she colored at school and he said "I love your turtle, Susanna! Great job!" He is something else! (and he is apparently a great compliment giver unless he is talking about me! Hilarious!)
